Wendy Barker


Wendy Barker was born in Gladstone Queensland.At 12 she moved to Rockhampton to further her dance studies and then Brisbane where she was chosen to perform as an extra with the Royal Ballet Company on tour in Australia. She met Margot Fonteyn and received a recommendation to the Royal Ballet School so set sail for England at 15.As professional dancer,Wendy performed with the London Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and American Classical Ballet where she partnered with Rudolf Nureyev. Other performance experience includes Royal Opera Ballet Covent Garden, London Palladium, Musical Comedy, Summer Stock and guest appearances with NYC Opera at Lincoln Centre. 

Wendy is a certified RAD teacher and draws on her international experience to influence each student’s performance. In New York she taught for American Ballet Theatre II, Ballet Hispanico of NYC and Mar y Anthony Dance Theatre before opening her own school on Staten Island. She served on the Board of the Staten Island Arts Council and as panelist for Affliated Artists for NewYork City’s Department of Cultural Affairs.

Returning to Australia, Wendy’s goal was to establish a youth dance company in Central Queensland. In 1998 she received a Queensland Arts grant, which led to the formation of the Young Dancers Company CQ.
