The Board and Staff of Sydney Eisteddfod are sad to hear of the passing of Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE who died in hospital on 11 February at the age of 92.
Famed as a rugby legend, Sir Nicholas first became Vice Patron of Sydney Eisteddfod after his tenure as Lord Mayor of City of Sydney, as was tradition at the time.
Sir Nicholas' wife Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO became patron of Sydney Eisteddfod in 2002, in her capacity as Governor of New South Wales, and is currently a Life Member.
Although his main interests rested in rugby, Sir Nicholas also appreciated the arts and enjoyed sharing duties with his wife.
Over the years, he attended many Sydney Eisteddfod events with his wife and on each occasion charmed its supporters with his friendly manner and sense of fun.
At this sad time our hearts reach out to Dame Marie, his three children and six grandchildren.
