Entrants must prepare FOUR contrasting arias from FOUR different operas from at least TWO musical periods and in at least TWO languages:
* One aria from before Mozart's death;
* One aria from after Mozart's death - 1791;
* The remaining two arias may be from any period.

Note: See Item 5 under the 'Conditions' for this Scholarship.

Arias are to be performed as follows, listed with tentative dates:
- By Audio Recording: Submission Date: Tuesday 1 May 2018 (without edit) - ONE aria of own choice
- by Live Performance: Sunday 20 May 2018 - ONE aria of own choice.
* Quarter-Final: Saturday 9 June 2018 - A different aria - selected by the adjudicators;
* Semi-Final: Sunday 10 June 2018 - The two remaining arias;
* Final: Sunday 15 July 2018, The Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood - Two arias from the four previously sung.

Finalists will perform two arias. One before interval with their chosen accompanist on the piano and one after interval with the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Steven Hillinger.

IMPORTANT: Entrants electing to participate in the heats via audio recording are required to submit a recording of a performance made in 2018. Those found in breach of this will be disqualified and possibly banned from entering this event in future years.

1. Previous winners not eligible.
2. Event is open to any singer who is a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand.
3. Semi-Finalists will be required to produce proof of age and residency before they are allowed to compete (e.g. birth certificate or an Australian or New Zealand passport or a permanent resident stamp. A driver's licence is not acceptable).
4. REPERTOIRE: Arias may be chosen from the entire range of the operatic literature as currently performed in major opera houses around the world, including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Verismo, Modern, Opera Comique and Operetta.
SPECIAL NOTE: The conductor will choose ANY ONE of these four arias for the orchestral accompaniment at the Final. The finalists will not have the choice of selecting which aria they wish to sing with the Orchestra, so please choose your four arias carefully. Entrants are encouraged to choose arias from the standard operatic repertoire in order to ensure that orchestral music is available for at least one of their selections.
5. Arias are to be no longer than ten (10) minutes each including recitative (if any). Cuts may be made if necessary. Long instrumental preludes or interludes should be curtailed.
6. All arias must be sung in the original key and language set by the composer, performed from memory with piano accompaniment.
7. The title of ALL FOUR ARIAS and a 200 word biography in paragraph format (as a Word file, not printed) MUST BE EMAILED to: operascholarship@sydneyeisteddfod.com.au NO LATER THAN Tuesday 1 May 2018 or entry may be forfeited. No changes to the nominated arias will be allowed within the fortnight before the commencement of the heats.
8. All of the arias may be repeated ONCE in other events (see Item 7 under the Classical Singing Category Rules & Conditions).
9. One copy only of each aria must be supplied for the adjudicators at the Heat, Quarter-Finals and Semi-Final.
10. Adjudicators' reports will be written for the preliminary heats only. No marks will be given on these reports.
11. Singers chosen for the Quarter-Finals will be announced no later than Monday 21 May, 2018. Sixteen Semi-Finalists will be chosen from the Quarter-Finals. EIGHT FINALISTS AND TWO RESERVE FINALISTS will be selected for the Final.
12. ACCOMPANIST: No Official Accompanist provided for the Heats, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Final or Final. Finalists will be required to bring their accompanist for ONE ARIA in the Final. Accompaniment for the other aria will be by the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
13. COMPULSORY Rehearsals: Finalists must be available for:
* Piano rehearsals (with their private accompanists & the conductor) during the week leading up to the Final.
* Orchestral rehearsals on either: Monday 9 July or Thursday 12 July, as well as Saturday 14 July, or as decided by the conductor closer to the time.
* Compulsory piano/orchestral rehearsal (with their private accompanists & the conductor) on the day of the Final. Times to be decided later.
14. It is compulsory for Finalists to be present at the conclusion of the Semi-Final for interviews with the adjudicators, have photographs taken and be informed about the proceedings for the Final.
15. The awarding of the Scholarship is at the absolute discretion of the adjudicators, and is given on the understanding that the Winner will undertake overseas study for the operatic stage, including vocal tuition/coaching, languages and stagecraft.
16. The Winner is required to submit a detailed plan of study to Sydney Eisteddfod, after which payment of the Scholarship will be made progressively upon production of written reports from the teacher or institution. The Scholarship must be taken up within two years from the date of winning, and completed within one year thereafter or be forfeited.
17. The Winner and Finalists must be reasonably available for media interviews and to perform without fee in future Showcase performances nominated by and in the interest of Sydney Eisteddfod.

Total Prize Value Exceeds $70,000

The Sydney Eisteddfod John Lamble Foundation Winner Scholarship:
Total Prize exceeds $43,000;
* $5,000 cash plus a $35,000 Scholarship and a return economy airfare (up to the value of $3,000) to undertake overseas study for the operatic stage, including vocal tuition/coaching, languages and stagecraft.
* Opportunity to attend rehearsals at Opera Australia in Melbourne or Sydney and observe an opera throughout the stages of its production.
* The Winner also receives a photographic portfolio to the value of $100 of performance photos taken during the Festival courtesy of WinkiPoP Media.

2nd Scholarship: $12,000 ($2,000 cash plus a $10,000 Scholarship paid in two equal instalments). Sponsored by The Sydney Savage Club, Margaret Moore, Arete Zantiotis and John Germain Memorial Funds.

3rd Prize: $5,000. Sponsored anonymously.

Finalists (excluding place-getters): $1,000 each. Sponsored by Douglas Sutherland AM.

Audience Vote: $500. Sponsored by Sydney Eisteddfod Jubilee Fund.

Eight Semi-Finalists (not selected for the Final): $500 each. Sponsored by Brian France AM & Philippa France, Michael Taylor, Victor Morris and supplemented by the Sydney Eisteddfod Jubilee Fund.

Eight of the most promising young singers from Australia and New Zealand will perform accompanied by the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Steven Hillinger, in the event that has launched the careers of countless Australian opera singers since it began in 1933.  This is an event that no genuine opera lover should miss.
