Danita Weatherston, 2017 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship Quarter-Finalist
Danita Weatherstone is a Lyric Soprano from the Central Coast, NSW. Danita completed her studies at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts and then continued on to complete both a Bachelor of Music and a Post Graduate Diploma in Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
In this time Danita performed with the Conservatorium Opera Ensemble, recorded songs by Judith Wright live for Sydney ABC radio and performed the title role of Maria in the premier production of Nothing but a Raucous Instrument, a contemporary chamber Opera by Lachlan Hughes. Danita has also appeared as Yum-Yum in The Mikado, 2nd Lady in Dido and Aeneus, 1st Bridesmaid in Le Nozze di Figaro and as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute.
In the 2013 Australian Singing Competition, Danita won the Mozarteum scholarship to complete a Post Graduate Fellowship in Opera and Music Theatre at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Here, Danita performed recitals at Frohnburg Castle and was a soloist at the Salzburg Residence Palace Ball. Danita also performed scenes from Mozart’s Cosi fan tutti in the role of Fiordiligi for the Mozart Opera Institute. Danita received coaching at the Vienna State Opera and later undertook Italian language study in Verona with the Meranda Scholarship in 2015.
In 2016, Danita appeared in Cleopatra for Opera Projects Sydney at the Independent Theatre and was a finalist for the Lady Fairfax New York Scholarship with The Opera Foundation for Young Australians.
The 2017 production of El Kid will be Danita’s first engagement with Opera Australia.
