Details

Entrants must prepare THREE contrasting arias from THREE different operas from at least TWO musical periods and in at least TWO languages:
- One aria from before Mozarts death;
- One aria from after Mozarts death - 1791;
- The remaining aria may be from any period.
Note: See Item 5 under the Conditions for this Scholarship.

Arias are to be performed as follows.
Heats:
- By Video Recording ONLY. Please see the 'Video Submission Guidelines' under the Entrant's Corner for more information. Submission Date Monday 16 May 2022 (without edit) - ONE aria of own choice.
Semi-Final - Live Performance:
Sunday 12 June 2022 @ Zenith Theatre. The two remaining arias in a live performance.
Final - Live Performance:
Saturday 25 June 2022: Rehearsal
Sunday 26 June 2022 @ The Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood. Two arias from the three previously sung, in a live performance

Final will be recorded by Fine Music.

Entrants MUST EMAIL: operascholarship@sydneyeisteddfod.com.au NO LATER THAN Monday 16 May 2022, the following details or entry may be forfeited:
(a) Video recording (accompaniment must be piano only) + A Copy of their birth certificate or passport. (A driver's licence is not acceptable).
(b) Title of ALL THREE ARIAS - highlighting the aria which has been submitted on the video. (No changes AFTER Monday 30 May 2022).
(c) A 200 word biography in paragraph format (as a WORD document, not printed). This biography will be given to the judges at the Semi-Final stage and should contain information of your current & proposed studies, especially should you win this Scholarship.
(d) Your preferred COLOUR publicity picture (if you have one) as a JPEG file - in HIGH RESOLUTION.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
VIDEO RECORDING ONLY FOR THE HEATS. ALL entrants are required to submit a recording of a performance made in 2022 (without edit). Those found in breach of this will be disqualified and possibly banned from entering this event in future years.

No Official Accompanist provided for the Semi-Final or Final. Finalists will be required to bring their accompanist for ONE ARIA in the Final. Accompaniment for the other aria will be by the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra.

CONDITIONS:
1. Previous winners not eligible.
2. Event is open to any singer who is a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand.
Please indicate under Notes on your entry form if you have currently applied for PR status and when you expect to hear from the appropriate authorities.
3. Adjudicators reports will be written for the preliminary heats only. No marks will be given on these reports.
4. REPERTOIRE: Arias may be chosen from the entire range of the operatic literature as currently performed in major opera houses around the world, including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Verismo, Modern, Opera Comique and Operetta.
SPECIAL NOTE: Dr Nicholas Milton AM, Conductor of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra will choose ANY ONE of the THREE arias for the orchestral accompaniment at the Final. The finalists will not have that choice. Singers are encouraged to choose arias from the standard operatic repertoire in order to ensure that orchestral music is available for at least one of their selections.
5. Arias are to be no longer than ten (10) minutes each including recitative (if any). Cuts may be made if necessary. Long instrumental preludes or interludes should be curtailed.
6. All arias must be sung in the original key and language set by the composer, performed from memory with piano accompaniment.
7. All of the arias may be repeated ONCE in other events (see Item 7 under the Classical Singing Category Rules & Conditions).
8. No music required for the adjudicators for this Scholarship.
9. Singers chosen for the Semi-Final will be announced no later than Monday 6 June 2022. EIGHT FINALISTS AND TWO RESERVE FINALISTS will be selected for the Final.
10. ACCOMPANIST: No Official Accompanist provided for the Semi-Final or Final. Finalists will be required to bring their accompanist for ONE ARIA in the Final. Accompaniment for the other aria will be by the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra.
11. COMPULSORY Rehearsals: Finalists must be available for:
* Compulsory Piano and Orchestral (with their private accompanists and the conductor) rehearsals on Saturday 25th June 2022: 10.00pm-5:30pm - TBC
*Orchestral rehearsal on the day of the Final - Sunday 26th June 2022, 9.30am-12:30pm - TBC.
12. The awarding of the Scholarship is at the absolute discretion of the adjudicators and is given on the understanding that the Winner will undertake study for the operatic stage, including vocal tuition/coaching, languages and stagecraft.
13. The Winner is required to submit a detailed plan of study to Sydney Eisteddfod, after which payment of the Scholarship will be made progressively upon production of written reports from the teacher or institution. The Scholarship must be taken up within two years from the date of winning and completed within one year thereafter or be forfeited.
14. The Winner and Finalists must be reasonably available for media interviews and to perform without fee in future Showcase performances nominated by and in the interest of Sydney Eisteddfod.
15. Please refer to Item 15 under the Classical Singing Rules & Conditions of Entry. Your entry is accepted under these conditions.

2nd Scholarship: $10,000
$2,000 cash plus an $8,000 Scholarship paid in two equal instalments.

Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, in consultation with their Artistic Director Dr Nicholas Milton AM or a representative, may offer one of the finalists a professional engagement with the WSO in the next two years, subject to availability and suitability with the WSO's concert programming.

One or Two Finalists will also be invited to compete in the '2022 Fine Music Young Virtuoso Award Final (DATE: TBC) at The Founders Studio, Fine Music Sydney)'. Please refer to the conditions below for more information.

Fine Music Sydney has joined with Sydney Eisteddfod to select One or Two Finalists from this event who will be invited to compete in the '2022 Fine Music Young Virtuoso State Award Final', with the Winner representing the State in their 'National Finals (DATE & VENUE: TBC)'.

Age limit for entrants is 30 years and under at 31 December 2022. Finalists must be Australian or New Zealand permanent residents and have resided in the state of New South Wales for at least twelve (12) months prior to 30 November 2022 in order to represent NSW in the YVA State and National Finals. They must also not have been entered into a competition hosted by another MBS Station in 2022. Previous winners are also not eligible.

Repertoire for State Final:
Selected Finalists must prepare at least two contrasting items, with a total maximum duration of up to 15 minutes. Finalists need to understand that the timing will be strictly monitored. Fine Music Sydney broadcasts primarily classical and jazz music. Finalists should keep this in mind when choosing their repertoire.

Accompanist: Finalists are expected to organise their own accompanists for the State & National Final, if applicable. Finalists will be provided more information upon selection and after accepting their nomination.
