Shikara Ringdahl on Opera

dream.

"Ridiculous, overwhelming, transcendent, cathartic, heartbreaking."
- Soprano Shikara Ringdahl, 2018 Finalists in The Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship

"For me opera is the point beyond the ridiculous. The point where words are not enough, where movement is not enough, and the only way to fully express the force of feeling that circumstance has dictated these characters feel is through sound, a sound that all at once has the strength and power to cut through a giant orchestra and reach to the back of a concert hall, but can also become the finest, purest, softest, most vulnerable sound in the world.

"A lot of people think opera is just people screaming at each other, and let's be real, it kind of is, but a scream is a one of the most primal ways to convey fear and joy through sound, and I think as opera singers we spend years trying to harness this primal sound trying to turn it in to something beautiful, exquisite, and ultimately transcendent."
