Press Release: Eight Finalists announced for Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship

20 June 2017

Eight outstanding young vocalists have been selected to progress to the Final of the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship on Sunday 16 July. Finalists will have the opportunity to perform alongside the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the hope of securing their part of the $58,500 on offer for professional development.

The 2017 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship Finalists are:

Amanda Windred - Soprano (Oxley Vale)
Jessica Harper - Soprano (Newtown)
Zoe Drummond - Soprano (Homebush)
Bronwyn Douglass - Mezzo-Soprano (Voyager Point)
Danita Weatherstone - Lyric Soprano (Wyee)
Joelene Griffith - Soprano (Mount Kuring-Gai)
Imogen-Faith Malfitano - Soprano (Wollongong)
Boyd Owen - Tenor (Melbourne, VIC)

The quality of singing across the two days was exceptionally high, but as explained by adjudicator Anson Austin OAM, entrants needed to display more than just solid vocal skills.

“It’s not just about a beautiful voice, the voice is a tool to communicate what they think about the poetry and the music. To make it to this stage of the competition they must have already achieved an acceptably high standard of technique, in addition to this, I'm looking for musicality and artistry and what they bring to the music in terms of interpretation”.

“Performing with the orchestra is a really important aspect of the Final. It’s another level of development; a singer must be able to sing through thick orchestration as well as follow the conductor’s instructions and work as a team with the orchestra” said Mr Austin.

Adjudicator Peter Coleman-Wright AO further stressed the importance of performing with the orchestra and emphasised that each finalist should use the experience to grow as a performer.

“Each finalist has the wonderful opportunity to sing two arias in front of a public, one with the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra, which gives the singer the chance to be in a truly professional atmosphere. It will give the young artists a taste of what they are all dreaming of and should enhance their performing skills even more” said Mr Coleman-Wright.

The Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship Final will be held at The Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood on Sunday, 16 July 2017 at 2:30pm.
Adult $42; Concession $35.
