Sydney Eisteddfod is grateful to announce that in 2017 an additional Scholarship of $3,000 will be added in the NSW Doctors Orchestra Sydney Eisteddfod Instrumental Scholarship (16-25 years) thanks to the Dr Brian Shearman Memorial Fund.
Dr Brian Shearman was a dedicated Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon and an accomplished amateur musician, who unfortunately passed away in January this year. The fund has been established in memory of this wonderful medical musician with the support of his family, friends, colleagues and associates.
Brian began violin lessons at the age of 6 and played for the next 80 years. As a school boy he led the Shore School Orchestra and as a medical student, played in the University of Sydney Musical Society. At 19 he won a Federated Music Clubs of NSW Scholarship. He played in a number of orchestras and chamber groups throughout his life including the NSW and Australian Doctors Orchestras and Orchestra 143. He was an enthusiastic participant in the Amateur Chamber Music Society.
Dr Cathy Fraser, Founder and President of the NSW Doctors Orchestra said that the Orchestra remembers Brian as "a beautiful person, a true gentleman, who was a privilege to know and a pleasure to play with".
Sydney Eisteddfod is honoured to be able to provide additional opportunities for aspiring instrumentalists for many years to come through the creation of this additional scholarship.
