Sydney Eisteddfod is pleased to present Joshua Zhi from Hurstville as this year’s Winner of the Sydney Eisteddfod Kawai Junior Piano Scholarship. The Final event was held at The Zenith Theatre, Chatswood, on Thursday, 4 August.
This major Scholarship Final made its big debut last year and since has been a success in providing professional performance opportunities to our younger pianists aged 11-16. This year, 35 junior emerging pianists performed for the chance to be selected as one of the four finalists for the Final event.
Joshua Zhi showcased a magnificent performance of C. Vine: Piano Sonata No.1, Lento, and Leggiero e legato. This impressive performance saw Joshua win the Junior Scholarship of $5,000, consisting of a $4,000 Scholarship and a $1,000 cash prize.
Joshua Zhi is 15 years old and has been in the Rising Stars program of the Sydney Conservation of Music since 2014. He has performed in many eisteddfods and international competitions such as the Vienna International Music Competition and Manhattan International Music Competition, where he won first prize.
Joshua commented on what he enjoys about competitions like Sydney Eisteddfod.
“Competitions like the Sydney Eisteddfod give me an opportunity to perform, compete against, and learn from fellow musicians. It also gives me a clear goal to strive for and motivates me to work for it.”
The remaining finalists Yitong (Serena) Zhang from Wantirna, VIC, Jeffrey Dong from Chatswood, and Ella Liu from East Lindfield, each received a $300 cash prize.
This Scholarship is made possible by our generous sponsors: Kawai Australia, and by a donor through Sydney Eisteddfod.
Adjudicators, Brenda Jones and Tony Lee, were blown away by the incredible calibre of talent presented on the evening by the four junior emerging pianists, with the youngest performer only 11 years of age.
Sydney Eisteddfod congratulates the 2022 winner Joshua Zhi and all finalists Yitong (Serena) Zhang, Jeffrey Dong, and Ella Liu on their brilliant performances in the Final. We look forward to seeing what they will do next in their young careers.
