Jillian Burgess commenced her career in Berkeley, California where she coordinated an English in Action Programme at theYWCA for foreign speakers visiting the University of Berkeley. She also taught students with ADHD in the Berkeley School system. On returning to Australia, she ran an after-school drama programme, which led to the development of a home studio that produced many graduates of Trinity College London, the Australian Music Examinations Board and the Australian Speech Communication Association over the next 20 years.
For the last 23 years she has taught Speech Communication at Ravenswood School for Girls. Her students have been successful in Public Speaking competitions such as RostrumVoice ofYouth and Lions’Youth of the Year competitions. She has taken the Australian team to the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC) in Durban, South Africa, Lithuania and Pittsburgh, USA. This year she hosted the 30th WIDPSC at Ravenswood. Her student came first in Persuasive Speaking and became the World Champion in Persuasive Speaking 2017.
Jillian’s publications include the ‘Communicate with Con dence’ course for Japanese students at North SydneyTAFE,and‘English in Context’ Course for scientists.The teaching manual ‘How to be a Powerful Speaker’ designed for nal year students at the Institute for International Relations in Hanoi in 2004 is used by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare delegates for APEC conferences.
She is a founding member of The Australian Speaking Board,Vice President of the Australian Speech Communication Association (ASCA), an Examiner for ASCA and an adjudicator of Eisteddfodau.
