Bass Baritone Daniel Sumegi was the winner of the first McDonald’s Aria in 1989, formerly the Sun Aria, and now known as the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship. He has been the recipient of many
of Australia’s other major awards and voice competitions, and internationally was a finalist in the 1991 Luciano Pavarotti Contest
in Philadelphia, as well as being a winner of the Metropolitan Opera Contest in NewYork in 1994 and Plácido Domingo’s Operalia in 1995.
Since his 1988 debut he has gone on to have a highly successful operatic career, singing on the world’s great stages, including the Metropolitan Opera, and the opera companies of San Francisco, Paris, Hamburg, Barcelona,Tokyo, Frankfurt, Los Angeles,Washington DC and Houston, among many others. Some of Daniel Sumegi’s recent engagements have included Atlanta Symphony (Die Walküre), Opera Australia (Ring Cycle), and San Francisco Opera (Luisa Miller).
Regularly invited to appear at all of Australia’s major performing companies, he returns this season to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (Pelléas et Mélisande), with further performances for Seattle Opera (Madam Butterfly, Barbiere di Siviglia, Beatrice and Benedict, Aida), and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (Thaïs).
