DANCE: Ablaze Dance AcademY

Australia, Senior Performance Group.

IMG 9089Why did you decide to perform and send in this particular piece?

This year, our students have continued to work hard despite the challenges they have been faced with. With not having had the opportunity to perform onstage, this was the perfect chance for our students to have that ‘performance’ feeling once again, and to put their hard work and passion on display.

Do you have any performance goals and dreams for the future?

As a unit, our performance dreams for the future include having the opportunity to perform on stage as much as possible, and to have emotional impact on a live audience.

How have you managed to stay motivated towards your goals during this uncertain year?

Our studio has continued to provide dance training throughout the entire year. Our Zoom classes commenced the exact day we were informed we could no longer operate face to face. We believe this was very important not just with regard to physical training, but also in relation to mental health/overall wellbeing.

What would winning a prize in Crowd Favourite Performances mean to you?

This year has been tough for everyone. It would mean so much to us as a studio, and to our students. It would mean their hard work and dedication throughout this year hasn't gone unnoticed, and would encourage them to keep striving to better themselves as performers, and as people.

Would you be interested in taking part in our annual live Festival, Sydney Eisteddfod AS WELL AS an online competition, when we resume in 2021?

Yes. We love live performances, and an online competition has provided us with an opportunity we have not yet experienced. Both equally challenging and rewarding.

INSTRUMENTAL SOLO: Zigeunerweisen – Tracy

Australia, 10 years.

Tracy ZhaoWhy did you decide to perform and send in this particular piece?

This music piece Zigeunerweisen is my favourite. I especially like the fast part.

Do you have any performance goals and dreams for the future?

To attend the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists.

What would winning this prize mean to you?

[I would] feel happy because people like my playing!

Would you take part in our annual live Festival AS WELL AS an online competition, when we resume in 2021?

Yes. Meet more kids and have a good opportunity to perform!

Tracy also told Sydney Eisteddfod that the experience she gained in her previous years of performing on stage with us has been her favourite thing.

CLASSICAL SINGING: Vesti La Giubba - Sam Elmi

Australia, 35 years.

Why did you decide to perform and send in this particular piece for Sydney Eisteddfod’s Crowd Favourite Performances?

Juggling between medicine and art, being hit by COVID19, I filmed this Canio's aria from Pagliacci to show the sufferings we, as doctors, are going through while we have to wear masks and wear a smile on our face to help our patients stay positive over this tough period. So, I decided to send this video to convey this message that we should stand strong and positive as well as supporting the art industry over this period.

What/who has been your biggest inspiration when it comes to performing?

Watching and hearing the greatest opera singers of all time Mario del Monaco, Franco Corelli and Luciano Pavarotti  and so forth has made a great impression on me. I can never forget classical singing in my life and I try to do my best to reach the standard levels of singing as much as possible.

Do you have any performance goals and dreams for the future?

I aim to perform professionally and start auditioning for professional opera companies as I have now almost finished my fellowship exam in General Practice specialty so I would have more time to devote to my passion and art.

My music and singing are one of the main reasons I could survive over this tough period. My aim of performing is to convey this message to show how music can help us uplift our mood by expressing our emotions and innermost thoughts through music.

After the conclusion of our online competition, would you be interested in taking part in our annual live Festival, Sydney Eisteddfod, AS WELL AS an online competition, when we resume in 2021?

Definitely , it will be my pleasure to contribute to any live Festivals and Sydney Eisteddfod and online competitions as Sydney Eisteddfod’s competitions and concerts are so prestigious and of high quality so I will be so excited and honoured to be part of these programmes.

Any advice for young aspiring artists who are deciding whether they should enter Sydney Eisteddfod when entries open for 2021?

I have learnt many things specifically through participating in Sydney Eisteddfods competitions and festivals to familiarise more with my weakness and strength points in my performance through the productive feedbacks as well as meeting lovely and well educated people.

SPEECH & DRAMA: Welcome to Hell with an Irish Twist - LA Feeney

Ireland, 20 years.

LA Feeney Dublin Ireland promo 2Why did you decide to perform and send in this particular piece for Sydney Eisteddfod’s Crowd Favourite Performances?

I have been passionate about the performing arts since 4 years old and am in my 3rd year studying for a degree in drama and film on a scholarship with University College Dublin, Ireland.

Currently living in locked-down Dublin, Ireland, COVID-19 has driven my acting and dancing online as I seek ways to continue learning and growing and competing while surviving in these extraordinary times.  This context was a key influence for my video as we see the main character “Sean” using a face mask and referring to “spikes”.

What/who has been your biggest inspiration when it comes to performing?

I aspire to gain recognition as a comedic actor and, as a result, along with Rowan Atkinson I have been most inspired by James Corden and Jim Parsons counting their work, “Gavin and Stacey” (hugely popular bitter-sweet British comedy) and “The Big Bang Theory” as a couple of my most favourite TV shows.

From a dance point of view, my inspiration comes from dancers and teachers including Kerrie Milne, Zacc Milne and Ian Harris [just to name a few!].

Do you have any performance goals and dreams for the future?

Firstly, I must complete my degree in Drama and Film and then I will either seek to do a Masters in Performance Practice or do as many auditions as I can ... to seek experience, learn and grow.

BAFTA?  Emmy?  Oscar?  For sure, and I will not stop until I have one or all of them!

What would winning a prize in Crowd Favourite Performances mean to you?

Should I win, undoubtedly it will be re-invested in my career in the shorter or the longer term.  However, I have the sense that I have won already by getting to this stage in the competition as it allows me an international platform to share my passion and work with all my family, friends, fellow students, teachers, peers and social media contacts.

Would you enter another online virtual competition in 2021?

100%, no doubt whatsoever! I fully intend to continue as currently in addition to making the public vote in the Sydney Eisteddfod, I am also competing in the final of a two versus two “creativity” hip-hop dance competition in Mexico.

MUSICAL THEATRE: Ex Wives, SIX the Musical, one woman, six voices - María del Rosario Cabrera Martínez

Argentina, 22 years.

InShot 20191220 134015987Why did you decide to perform and send in this particular piece?

I wanted to do something that represents who I am and what I do. Musical Theatre is what I love and what I do, so I knew that I wanted to perform a number from a musical. I also love powerful harmonies and group numbers, which is why I chose “Ex Wives” from the musical SIX, because it allows me to mix everything I love  in a five minute video and makes me feel powerful as a performer.

What/who has been your biggest inspiration when it comes to performing?

Both the Broadway and West End circle inspire me every single day. But if I had to choose one person, I would say that’s Lin Manuel Miranda. Maybe it sounds a bit clichè because he has inspired a lot of people, but the place he has built for us latinos in the broadway community shows me that nothing’s impossible and that limits exist only in our heads.

Do you have any performance goals and dreams for the future?

My main goal is to be on Broadway. I don’t call it a dream anymore because I’m determined to make it a reality. I would love to play Glinda in Wicked someday (which has never been played by a Latina in the US) and Anastasia too.

How have you managed to stay motivated towards your goals during this uncertain year?

It wasn’t easy. I had a lot of projects for this year that I was really excited about...

Enrolling in this competition was part of my “getting back on my feet” plan too, and it’s working. Because I was waiting for things to change and that is what was dragging me down. Once I got in motion, everything else did.

Would you enter another online virtual competition in 2021?

Yes, I would. This has been an amazing experience, no matter the result. I am very thankful for this opportunity, not only because it gave me something to do and to look forward to every day, but it also reminded me of what I’m capable of, and that is priceless.
