Newcastle Chamber Choir & Frensham Madrigals win big at Sydney Eisteddfod!
Friday night at the concourse was a truly spectacular showcase of choral talent featuring performers of all ages giving their all. Dr Sarah Penicka-Smith described the standard as extraordinary remarking "picking a winner is the hardest part of this job, all of (the performers) were capable of winning and everyone presented polished and refined performances that had moments of emotion and connection. Because of this it came down to which choirs took risks..."
OPEN CHORAL CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER: Newcastle Chamber Choir
Newcastle Chamber Choir is known for vibrant performances of eclectic repertoire. Renaissance multi-choir pieces, contemporary Australian works and pop music are regularly featured. The Choir regularly perform around Australia and tour overseas, sharing their love of choral music. Newcastle Chamber Choir competes in events like Sydney Eisteddfod To hone a high level of musicality.
OPEN CHORAL CHAMPIONSHIP SECOND PLACE: Southern Brothers
The Southern Brothers are an audition based initiative established by Director Danny Benn to encourage more young males to sing. The group has become a brotherhood for its members who come together to sing, talk and support one another. The Southern Brothers have competed in many competitions since it's inception as well as having performed in community events both locally & interstate and hold a strong reputation within the vocal community.
CHAMPIONSHIP FOR YOUTH CHOIRS (19 & UNDER) WINNER: Frensham Madrigals
The Frensham Madrigals is an award winning choral ensemble, which has achieved particular success annually at the prestigious Sydney Eisteddfod John Lamble Foundation Australian Choral Championship for Youth Choirs. The music tradition at Frensham is at the heart of the School experience for every girl.
