Boyd Owen on Opera

achieve.

"Sublime, transformative, demanding, electrifying, transcendent."
- Tenor Boyd Owen,  Finalist in the 2016 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship

"The Olympic motto is “…citius, altius, fortius…” which translates "faster, higher, stronger." To me opera demands the same of the voice, we go to the vocal arena of the theatre to see artists who have dedicated their lives to the never ending pursuit of musical ‘faster, higher, stronger’. With them we share a brief moment of breathless wonder as we see and hear them, like alchemists, weave the heights of technical mastery together with poetic artistry. When a singer nails that famous passage from that famous aria we are so moved that we jump to our feet in rapturous applause because we know it’s a gold medal moment and ‘we were there.’ Those moments may be rare, but they never leave our memories - they are moments of transcendence. Tell me where else you can find that? "
