Despite adverse weather warnings, Sydney Eisteddfod supporters abounded in the huge crowd that gathered on Saturday, 23 January for the annual Mazda Opera in the Domain. Starring the internationally acclaimed Mexican tenor Diego Torre with former Sydney Eisteddfod champions Natalie Aroyan, Luke Gabbedy, Lorina Gore, Sian Pendry and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Brian Castles-Onion, another SE veteran, the performance was a riotous success.
With the moon illuminating the heavens above, wonderful music and magnificent singing, the show progressed without a hitch and ended with the audience screaming for more. Since beginning as Esso Opera in the Park in 1982, this annual event has developed into a tradition that enhances Sydney’s reputation as a centre for music. Mazda Australia began sponsoring it as Opera in the Domain in 2005 and it now attracts an audience of over 100,000 each year. Sydney Eisteddfod supporters commented on the number of young people present in the audience and thank Opera Australia and Mazda Australia for staging this wonderful free entertainment.
