Sydney Eisteddfod patron receives the nation’s highest civic award

Since 1933.

Sydney Eisteddfod congratulates Her Excellency Professor The Honorable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO, Governor of New South Wales who was appointed Dame to the Order of Australia in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

The award acknowledges Dame Marie’s work and service to psychiatry, tertiary education, and administration as governor, and according to Prime Minister Tony Abbott, ‘she has brought warmth, compassion and grace to Australia’s oldest public office.’

For the past 13 years, Dame Marie has served as patron of Sydney Eisteddfod. As a former entrant in its instrumental events, she has a nostalgic affection for the annual festival and has always taken a keen interest in the role it plays in the cultural life of the city.
