Robert (Jock) Heath has been involved in Concert Band conducting; adjudicating; performing and as a Band Clinician for over 35 years. He has conducted bands at all levels from service bands in the RAN and the NSW Ambulance Service, to High School and Primary Schools bands. During his 25 years of service in the Navy he conducted Navy Band and Combined Service Bands in the Opera House on numerous occasions as well as playing at the official opening. He also conducted the Naval Support Command Band at the opening of the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
Whilst conductor of the RAN Band he was involved in numerous visits to Primary and High Schools for band performances and clinics. He also gained conducting diplomas from the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music and a Clarinet Teaching Diploma from Guildhall School of Music whilst completing the Royal Marine Bandmasters Course and gaining the award for Best Foreign Student.
He conducted numerous concerts in the Sydney Town Hall as part of the Sunday afternoon concert series plus performances at Darling Harbour and Martin Place. He is also in constant demand as a Clinician at numerous Band Festivals, Primary, and High School Band Camps His Primary and High School bands have gained many awards at the NSW Band Festival, the Yamaha Band Festival and the Sydney Eisteddfod. During his 17 years as Director of Bands at Newington College his groups gained over 25 awards in various categories.
Jock was until recently the Musical Director of the NSW Ambulance Service Concert Band and is currently a freelance conductor at various Primary School bands. His aim in life is to encourage and maintain a love of music in children of all ages and hopefully for them to continue that involvement into adulthood.
