Rani Luther was born in Melbourne and attended the National Theatre Ballet School before completing her Year 7-12 education at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. Her professional career began with the Kiel Ballet Company in Germany (1995) before moving to The Netherlands where she danced with world-renowned company Netherlands Dance Theatre 2 and The Netherlands Dance Theatre 1. In 2003 Rani returned home to join The Australian Ballet Company then the Sydney Dance Company (2007). She was Principal Dancer with the Melbourne Ballet Company from 2009-2011.
Rani won the gold medal at the ‘Sanlam International Ballet Competition’ Pretoria, South Africa in 1993, won the Outstanding Performance Award in the ‘GIO City of Sydney Eisteddfod Performance Arts Challenge’ 1994 and choreographed two premiere ballets for the Netherlands Dance Theatre Workshops 1998 and 1999. She received a nomination for best female dancer in the ‘Green Room Award’ (2006) for performances with The Australian Ballet Company and in 2009 won the Maurice Lacroix ‘Spirits of the Arts Award’ for seasons with The Melbourne Ballet Company.
In 2011 Rani was Rehearsal Director for the VCASS production ‘Dido and Aneas’, staged and directed two seasons premiered by MBC and in 2012 was part of founding and teaching Brent Street Schools Elite Classical Contemporary program. She was an adjudicator on the prestigious Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Ballet Scholarships in 2012 and 2014.
