Twelve-year old violinist Daniel Shao of Roselands will compete against nine other outstanding piano and instrumental winners from the recent Sydney Eisteddfod in the Alf & Pearl Pollard Memorial Awards for Performance Excellence on 7 October. Hosted by Lane Cove Music at the Lane Cove-Mowbray Anglican Church, this final play-off between the top 10 junior musicians will bring the 2014 festival to a close.
Born in China, Daniel is now in Year 7 at the Conservatorium High School. He began learning to play the violin at the age of 5 and has been studying with Peter Zhang for more than four years. He has participated in the Sydney Peter Zhang Violin Competition several times and claimed first prize on each occasion. A passionate and determined student, Daniel sees learning as a great adventure. He is always trying to achieve his goals and this year won the Violin Solo (12/u) at the McDonald’s Sydney Eisteddfod.
Now in its sixth year, the Alf & Pearl Pollard Memorial Awards for Performance Excellence are sponsored by the family of Emeritus Professor Alfred Pollard of Macquarie University who served as chairman of Sydney Eisteddfod from 1995 until his death in 2000.
