Press Release: Local Northern Beaches doctors to feature in concert for charity

The Northern Beaches area will be well represented on Sunday, 25 May, when the NSW Doctors Orchestra under the baton of Dr David Banney presents a fundraising concert entitled Stage & Screen at the Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood. The 78 members of this orchestra practise in medical fields, play for pleasure and gather occasionally under the banner of Musicus Medicus to give concerts for charity.

Several of the players live and work in the Northern Beaches, opthalmologist Dr James Smith and Dr Caron Jander who specialises in occupational and environmental medicine, among them.

Dr Smith, who plays the French horn, recently returned from Japan, where he and two other members of the orchestra joined musical medicos from all over the globe in the World Drs Orchestra that assembled in Tokyo to give benefit concerts for evacuees of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown. Dr Jander, who plays the double bass comes from a musical family. Her parents favoured the flute and oboe, but she encountered the double bass early in life and has loved it ever since.

The orchestra donates proceeds from its concerts to a different medical charity each year, and on this occasion the Day of Difference Foundation will benefit. Established in 2004 by Ron Delezio and his wife Catherine Martin following the tragic local accidents of their daughter Sophie, this deserving charity works tirelessly reduce the impact and incidence of children’s critical injuries in Australia.

Aware of the importance of music in everyday life, the orchestra also supports the arts. It contributes to the Young Virtuosi program run by Fine Music, and since 2009 it has sponsored a $10,500 instrumental scholarship that carries its name in the annual Sydney Eisteddfod program.

In Stage & Screen, the doctors will perform a program of memorable music from films and ballets. Pianist Evgeny Ukhanov will feature as soloist playing Addinsall’s Warsaw Concerto and Ayse Shanal, a former winner of the Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Operatic Aria, will lift her lovely voice in a selection of songs from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.

These talented doctors have a dedicated following, so to avoid disappointment book without delay.
