Press Release: Local North Shore doctors to feature in concert for charity

5 May 2014

The North Shore will be well represented on Sunday, 25 May, when the NSW Doctors Orchestra under the baton of Dr David Banney presents a fundraising concert entitled Stage & Screen at the Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood. The 78 members of this orchestra practise in medical fields, play for pleasure and gather occasionally under the banner of Musicus Medicus to give concerts for charity.

Eighteen of the players live and work in North Shore suburbs. These include Lindfield GP Dr Cathy Fraser, who founded the orchestra in 2004 and continues to act as its manager. A talented flautist, Dr Fraser says that over the past 11 years, the orchestra has gone from strength to strength in both its music making and its philosophy of supporting charities in the arts and medicine. Dr Fraser and two other members of the orchestra recently returned from Japan where they joined the World Doctors Orchestra in concerts to support evacuees of the 2011 Fukashima nuclear meltdown.

The orchestra donates proceeds from its concerts to a different medical charity each year, and on this occasion the Day of Difference Foundation will benefit. Established in 2004, by Ron Delezio and his wife Catherine Martin following the tragic accidents of their daughter Sophie, this deserving charity works tirelessly to reduce the impact and incidence of children’s critical injury in Australia.

Aware of the importance of music in everyday life, the orchestra supports the arts by contributing to the Young Virtuosi program run by Fine Music 102.5, and since 2009 it has taken pride in sponsoring the $10,500 scholarship that carries its name in the Sydney Eisteddfod program.

In Stage & Screen, the doctors will perform a program of memorable music from remember favourite films and ballets. Pianist Evgeny Ukhanov will feature as soloist playing Addinsall’s Warsaw Concerto and Ayse Shanal, a former winner of the Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Operatic Aria, will lift her lovely voice in selection of songs from Leonard Bernstein’s Westside Story.

These talented doctors have a dedicated following, so to avoid disappointment book without delay.
