Nicholas Young's Piano Scholarship Success

achieve.

A round of applause for 25-year-old Nicholas Young who won the Allison/Henderson Sydney Eisteddfod  Piano Scholarship with his rendition of Sonata in B Minor S.178 by Franz Liszt. Nicholas competed against three other gifted entrants, but ultimately came away with the substantial $10,000 scholarship and $2,000 cash prize due to his "phenomenal ability to learn and perform such demanding repertoire".

Adjudicator Ian Munro commented on Nicholas' performance, stating it was “Wonderful to hear your progress and looking forward to hearing the next gigantic opus!”

Nicholas has competed on the Sydney Eisteddfod platform for many years, always to great success. In 2010, he took out top honours in the Russian Piano (Any Age) and the Australian Piano (16/o) events. The following year, he made his Allison/Henderson Sydney Eisteddfod Piano Scholarship debut, receiving a Highly Commended for his efforts and winning the Piano Polyphony (18/o) event. In 2012, he once again competed in the Allison/Henderson Sydney Eisteddfod Piano Scholarship, going on to be selected as Reserve 1  and once again receiving a Highly Commended for his performance.

Since then, Nicholas has gone on to graduate from a Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2013 with First Class Honours and University Medal and has also recently completed Masters studies with Claudius Tanski at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg in 2015.

Sydney Eisteddfod also congratulates Kathy Chow, Aaron Liu and Alexander Yau on magnificent performances. All finalists presented a polished and entertaining evening full of challenging repertoire and all should be proud of their efforts.

It is obvious by the level of skill and determination demonstrated by Nicholas, that he has a promising career ahead of him. Sydney Eisteddfod looks forward to hearing about his future successes and the various opportunities that arise as he begins on this journey.
