13 July, 2015
On the evening of August 2, eight of Australasia’s most promising young dancers will gather at the Sydney Opera House to compete in the final round of the prestigious 2015 Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Ballet Scholarships.
A highlight of the Sydney Eisteddfod Festival, the scholarships not only spotlight emerging dance professionals to adjudicators such as David McAllister, Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, but significantly also carry a total prize value of $36,000. These scholarships attract dancers in the 16- 19 age group who are anxious to engage in advanced pre-professional training in Australia or abroad. A $15.000 scholarship plus $3,000 cash is awarded to the outright winner and the best dancer of the opposite sex picks up a $10,000 scholarship and $2,000 cash prize while the six unplaced finalists receive $1,000 each.
These scholarships unfailingly draw a tremendous interest and this year, with a total entry of 174 entrants, the 2015 competition ranks as the second largest on record.
The 2015 finalists to perform at The Sydney Opera House are:
Emma Antrobus (Conlan College), Jasmin Forner and Harrison Lee (McDonald College), Brayden Gallucci (Lake Macquarie Dance Centre and Alegria Studios), Aiden Foster (Charlesworth Ballet Institute, WA), Katherine Sonnekus (Tanya Pearson Classical Coaching Academy), and, Amelia Townsend and Madison Whitely (Annette Roselli Dance Academy).
As usual, the Open Jazz Dance Group final will also feature in the program, along with showcase performances by 2015 winners. Widely regarded as one of the most exciting events on the Sydney dance calendar, this final always attracts a capacity crowd, and while some seats are still available, advance booking is absolutely essential.
