The stars are clearly shining on Anna Dowsley this year. Since her recent victory in the $43,000 Lady Fairfax New York Scholarship, the 24-year-old Lane Cove soprano has been adding richly to her laurels in the classical singing section of McDonald's Sydney Eisteddfod.
During the run of this competition, Anna has won the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Awards, the English Opera & Art Song contest, finished second in the prestigious Joan Sutherland Vocal Memorial Scholarship and also received a special prize as the Best Mezzo Soprano in the contest.
Anna competed with five other outstanding finalists in the Opera & Arts Support Group Vocal Scholarship. A highlight of the Sydney Eisteddfod program, this event always attracts a number of Australia's finest young singers and once again Anna triumphed against the best by winning the $10,000 Emiel Doeland Memorial Scholarship.
At the end of the year, Anna will be off to New York, but before then she will be testing her talents again in the Australian Singing Competition and with her success record for this year firmly intact, it looks as if she will be starting at very short odds.
