Although the major operatic aria scholarship is carrying a new name in the Sydney Eisteddfod program, the value of its prizes and the richness of its 83-year history will add to its appeal. Now known simply as the ‘Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship’, this prestigious event has been trumpeting Australasia’s international reputation as a producer of fine singers for the past 83 years.
Previously known as the Sun Aria, the Sydney Morning Herald Aria and the McDonald’s Operatic Aria, this competition has served as a launching pad for some of the nation’s finest voices. The names of Joan Sutherland, Rosina Raisbeck, Dame Heather Begg, Jonathan Summers, Daniel Sumegi and Stuart Skelton illuminate the Sydney Eisteddfod galaxy of stars, while a new generation of shining stars is rising rapidly in their wake.
