Dancer Daniel Russell, 2014 runner-up of the Sydney Eisteddfod Ballet Scholarship, is in full rehearsal mode in Austria in preparation for the West Side Story International Tour.
Daniel, 20, moved to New York last year and completed dance studies with the Broadway Dance Centre.
He was recently cast as Baby John, member of The Jets gang, after an audition in New York City. The international tour will start in November in Bremen, Germany, and continue in several locations throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Although he has played the role previously in another production of West Side Story in Florida, he is thrilled with the opportunity to revisit the experience, particularly because he is excited to “see the world”.
“My dad actually performed the very same role professionally when he was around my age, and I find it to be a really cool and special experience we share,” he said.
The audition for the Florida production a year ago was Daniel’s first audition in New York and he said he felt like a “fish out of water”.
“This time it felt like a reunion of sorts. The room was full of familiar faces, many of whom I had lived and performed with. It really came full circle for me.”
Daniel said he is grateful for the stage experiences he gained as a Sydney Eisteddfod entrant.
“Looking back, moving to New York all became possible in the way it did through the Scholarship and I am very grateful for that,” he said.
Sydney Eisteddfod wishes Daniel the best of luck in the West Side Story International Tour!
