Audiences were out in mass to support their favourite choirs at Sydney Eisteddfod’s The John Lamble Foundation Australasia Open Choral Championship on Sunday 14 June – and they were not disappointed.
Despite competing all week, each of the choirs maintained their energy right up until the Championship and adjudicators Simon Kenway and Michelle Leonard commented on the high over all standard of all of the choirs however it was Choir of Southern Lights from Dapto that emerged victorious. The adjudicators described their rendition of “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay as ‘perfectly pitched’ and their performance of “My Heart Will Go On” as sublime.
Other standout performers included Ascham Canzona from Edgecliff who placed second and Soulfood A Cappella from Naremburn in third. Spectacular performances were given by all of the other finalists; Sydney Vocal Project (Cammeray), PVS Glee Club (Burwood), Bel Cantare Choir (Kensington), Ascham Senior Choir (Edgecliff), Northern Beaches Chorus (Terrey Hills), Coastal Acappella (Erina) and Urban Voices (Epping).
Michelle Leonard also urged choirs and audience members to reflect on the importance of supporting Australian choirs, to listen to each other’s choirs and to be inspired, with community choirs as a unique phenomena that brings people together through their love of singing to make music in their style and creating something beautiful.
The event was truly inspirational and Sydney Eisteddfod thanks the wonderful choirs that performed, their conductors, accompanists and prize sponsor The John Lamble Foundation for making it all possible.
