The 2011 Sydney Eisteddfod Contemporary Singer of the Year Bronte Florian is “beside herself” about being cast to understudy as Lauren in the Broadway hit musical Kinky Boots.

After a successful year with Sydney Eisteddfod, Bronte Florian graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts under full scholarship (Bachelor of Music Theatre) with high distinction and was invited to travel to New York on a scholarship for training. This is her first opportunity to step into a female lead role in a major production – a great achievement indeed!

Bronte, from Middle Dural, was in London when she got the news and said the excitement kept her awake for the rest of the night.

“The next morning I marched straight down to the Adelphi Theatre, booked myself a ticket to Kinky Boots and watched the UK cast perform this incredible show,” she said.

“Now I’m one of two female “swings” in the show, which means I understudy five of the female characters, including the two leads, Lauren and Nicola. It’s my job to jump on stage at a moments notice and cover these characters should anyone need to take a show off.

“My first performance was shortly after we opened and I was thrilled to make my professional debut with this company, going on as the leading lady, Lauren.”

Bronte said competing in different sections at Sydney Eisteddfod helped prepare her to be professionally versatile.

“There would be days at Sydney Eisteddfod where I’d do a musical theatre section in the morning, an R&B section in the afternoon, and then that night come back and do a duet with my sister, Eliza. My brain had to have everything ready-to-go, while my body and my voice had to be trained enough to jump into any style – very much like my job now where I have to be diverse enough as a performer to understudy a wide variety of characters,” she said.

“The most valuable thing you can have as a performer is versatility, and that is something that the Sydney Eisteddfod really encourages from an early age.”

Kinky Boots debuted in Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne in October and will make its way to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in April 2017.
