The choral section of the 2014 McDonald’s Sydney Eisteddfod Syllabus is packed with exciting opportunities for Youth Choirs. The program includes events for mixed, male and female Youth Choirs along with events for Youth Sacred/Gospel Choirs and Youth Chamber Choirs. These events will all take place in the splendid Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood, on June 1.
Choirs that place in each of these events will be eligible to compete in The John Amble Australasian Championship for Youth Choirs that will be held at the same venue on Saturday, 14 June. Qualifying for this championship is an honour in itself and there are more rewards in offing attached as choirs that place first and second progress into the Australian Choral Grand Prix that Sydney Eisteddfod is presenting with the Rotary Club of Sydney Cove on Sunday, 24 August.
Carrying a total prize purse of $28,000, the Australian Choral Grand was presented for the first time in 2013 as part of Sydney Eisteddfod’s 80th Anniversary celebrations and proved so successful that it is being offered again this year. The inaugural event was dominated by youth choirs with the PLC Sydney Chamber Choir winning the $10,000 first prize, along with a magnificent trophy. While the Fort Street High School Chamber Choir finished in second place, and in addition to receiving the $5,000 prize, won another $1,000 for giving the best performance of an Australian composition.
To be eligible for The John Amble Foundation Australasian Choral Championships or the Australian Choral Grand Prix, choirs must enter one or more events in the choral category.
