Emily Seymour and Caleb Durbin have joined the Houston Ballet. Both former champions of the Sydney Eisteddfod, these two exceptionally talented dancers enrolled at Houston Ballet Academy at the same time in 2013 and were soon performing with its junior company, the Houston Ballet ll.
A former student of the National College of Dance, Caleb, who excels in both classical and contemporary works, won the Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Ballet Scholarship in 2013. Following his victory, he accepted a place at the Houston School and headed for Texas almost immediately.
Emily, who previously studied at Tanya Pearson Classical Coaching Academy and All Starz Performing Arts, is also amazingly versatile. In 2013, as the only Australian to reach the final of the Youth of America Grand Prix, she was touted by the directors of several international ballet schools and decided the Houston offer was too good to refuse.
Directed by Australian Stanton Welch, the Houston Ballet is a leading American company. Emily and Caleb enjoy its varied repertoire, and with 2010 Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Ballet Scholarship finalists Rhys Kosakowski and Joel Woellner, already ensconced its ranks, they feel very much at home.
As Emily and Caleb both celebrate their 18th birthdays this year, their professional careers are off to an early start. Sydney Eisteddfod applauds their achievements and wishes them every success.
