Andrew Jezek


Andrew Jezek was born in Canberra and studied viola at the Canberra School of Music with Vincent Edwards and Charmian Gadd, graduating with honours in 1991. He continued his studies in Europe at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich with Jürgen Weber (viola) and at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst inVienna with Karl Österreicher (conducting).

He has been co-principal violist of the renowned contemporary music ensemble Klangforum Wien since 1996 and has performed at most major contemporary music festivals in Europe. He is a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival, Ruhr Triennale, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Wien Modern, Steirischer Herbst Graz, Wittener Tage, Wiener Festwochen, Berlin Festival,Venice Biennale and the Hudders eld Festival. He  has worked in close collaboration with some of the foremost living composers of today, premiering works by Georges Aperghis, Friedrich Cerha, Beat Furrer, Georg Friedrich Haas, Helmut Lachenmann, Olga Neuwirth, Enno Poppe,Wolfgang Rihm and Salvatore Sciarrino amongst others.

As part of Klangforum Wien’s education activities, he has taught the ensemble’s ‘Performance Practice in Contemporary Music’ professorship at the University of Graz, a two-year master’s study program and one-year postgraduate course. He was also instrumental in the development of the ensemble’s youth contemporary music education projects.

He has performed as a chamber musician with renowned Viennese ensembles such as Die Reihe, Ensemble Kontrapunkte, Österreichische Kammersymphoniker and the Wiener Kammeroper and has worked oncrossoverprojectswiththeViennaArtOrchestra,MarcelloOnofri Camerata, Oskar Aichinger Octett and Alegre Correa. He has been involved in various music theater, lm and television productions, and from 1993-95 was a member of the Austrian Radio Orchestra (RSO Wien). In 2013, Andrew relocated to Sydney with his wife Emma and daughter Lila.

Andrew now performs regularly with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as guest principal viola with the Australian and Opera Ballet Orchestra and is also a member of the Australian World Orchestra. He is actively engaged in youth music and education, tutoring at AYO National Music Camp and the Sydney Youth Orchestra.
